[Editorial] The truth is out there, somewhere
The Lancet | thelancet.com | 2020-08-01
The tidal wave of information on the internet concerning the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in difficulties in discerning truth from fiction. This so-called infodemic, defined by WHO as an "overabundance of information–some accurate and some not–that makes it harder for people to find trustworthy sources and reliable guidance when needed", has become a major threat to public health. Infection rates will rise if people are confused about restrictions and patients may be harmed if they use unproven treatments or bogus remedies.

Infectious diseases have long shaped human history, from the plague of Athens (430–427 BCE) that killed around a third of the Athenian population, the Black Death in the 14th century that killed about 30–60% of all Europeans, and the 1918–19 influenza pandemic that took the lives of at least 50 million people globally. In the 8 months since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, more than 600‚Äà000 people worldwide have died from COVID-19 as of July 21, 2020. We thank Marleen Hendriks and colleagues and Adam Richards for their comments regarding the HOPE 4 trial.1 Hendriks and colleagues draw attention to the generalisability of our findings as the non-physician health workers were paid by the project and the study medications were provided to the intervention group free of charge. Although working within the infrastructure of existing health-care systems might be theoretically optimal for uptake and sustainability, most health systems do not adequately address cardiovascular disease control.

With great interest we read the encouraging results of the HOPE 4 trial by Jon-David Schwalm and colleagues.1 However, we agree with Tanzeen H Jafar and colleagues2 that the generalisability of the findings is limited because the non-physician health workers were privately paid by the study, and drugs were provided for free. Our work in Kenya shows that non-physician health workers are often overburdened, and that drugs are frequently out of stock in public facilities and pricey in private health facilities, leading to high out-of-pocket expenditure.

Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disorder characterised by recurrent eczematous lesions and intense itch. The disorder affects people of all ages and ethnicities, has a substantial psychosocial impact on patients and relatives, and is the leading cause of the global burden from skin disease. Atopic dermatitis is associated with increased risk of multiple comorbidities, including food allergy, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and mental health disorders. The pathophysiology is complex and involves a strong genetic predisposition, epidermal dysfunction, and T-cell driven inflammation.

'The pandemic has disrupted the lives of billions of people. Many have been at home for months', he said. The trauma of the Great Lockdown is taking a serious psycho-social toll. 'It's completely understandable that people want to get on with their lives', Dr. Ghebreyesus said. 'But we will not go back to the "old normal". Trump's Golden Era Of Energy Is Turning To Lead
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-01
It was just over a year ago that President Trump announced, "The golden era of American energy is now underway," saying that his policies focused on exploiting oil, gas, and coal were "unleashing energy dominance." | What a difference a year makes. On July 10, the Financial Times ran an article with a headline that asked, "Is the party finally over for U.S. oil and gas?" And there is no doubt that it has been quite a party for the last decade. At least, for the fracking executives who have enriched themselves while losing hundreds of billions of dollars investors gave them to produce oil and gas.

China's Ambassador to the United States posed a very simple question: "Is the United States ready or willing to live with another country with a very different culture, a very different political and economic system … in peace?" | The answer to this question must be that despite the intentions of the U.S. rulers, the people must opt for peace. For the Black liberation and anti-imperialist movement in the U.S., we are clear: War is a class issue and we say not one drop of blood from the Black working class and poor to defend the capitalist oligarchy.

Patrick BUCHANAN | There is a real possibility that, this coming week, Joe Biden will be selecting the 47th president of the United States. | For the woman Biden picks — he has promised to exclude from consideration all men, black, brown, white or Asian — has a better chance of succeeding to the presidency than any vice presidential nominee in U.S. history, other than perhaps Harry Truman. | In 1944, the Democratic establishment engineered the dumping of radical Henry Wallace from Roosevelt's ticket. They could see from FDR's physical deterioration that he would not last through a full fourth term.

Civil Rights Hero John Lewis Remembered at Funeral as "Patriot Who Risked His Life" for Democracy

As family, friends and dignitaries paid their final respects at the Atlanta funeral of John Lewis, the civil rights leader and 17-term Georgia Congressmember was remembered as a singular force for equality and justice. The funeral took place at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, once led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., where senior pastor Rev. Raphael Warnock contrasted Lewis' legacy with "some in high office who are much better at division than vision," and described the late politician as "a true American patriot who risked his life and bled for the hope and promise of democracy."

Bill Clinton Used John Lewis's Funeral to Disparage the Black Freedom Struggle
Staff | truthout.org | 2020-07-31
Bill Clinton has a penchant for overstepping, for going too far and for being too cocky, especially when it comes to Black people. He assumes a kind of insider posture that is, quite frankly, offensive. | This posture was on full display yesterday when, while eulogizing the late civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis, Clinton took the liberty to render his opinion about who was a good Black leader vs. who was a not-so-good Black leader. In referring to the political differences betwe…

To Reopen Schools Safely, We Need to Fund Teachers — Not Cops
Staff | truthout.org | 2020-07-31
Ask Randi Weingarten, president of the 1.7 million-member American Federation of Teachers (AFT), what public schools need in order to safely reopen this fall and her answer is immediate: more money for the daily deep-cleaning of schools; personal protective equipment (PPE) for teachers, staff and students; the hiring of thousands of additional school nurses and counselors to help students navigate social and emotional roadblocks; reliable computers and internet access for every kid; and a 10 percent increase i…

Voter ID Law Handed Wisconsin to Trump in 2016. It Could Happen Again in 2020
Staff | truthout.org | 2020-07-31
Donald Trump's 2016 Wisconsin win was a shock to the Democratic Party — but then, the Democratic Party is always shocked — because Wisconsin was supposed to be a safe state for Hillary Clinton. | Democrats had crushed it seven elections in a row, helped by the massive vote from the famously progressive, activist University of Wisconsin student population. | But then, on Election Day 2016, a giant hunk of the student vote simply… vanished. And the Milwaukee Black vote also seemed…

Staff | truthout.org | 2020-07-31
The United States economy saw a monumental contraction in the second quarter of this year, dropping at a rate that is unprecedented since records of performance started being kept in the 1940s. | U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) shrunk by seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 32.9 percent. Russophobia Goes Viral Again… And Fatally No Cure
_____ | strategic-culture.org | 2020-07-31
This week saw U.S. media reports claiming that Russian military intelligence is spreading disinformation about the coronavirus to sow discord ahead of the November presidential election. Such reports are nothing but more bombast and reprehensible Russophobia as part of a chronic mental condition which seems to have no cure. | Meanwhile, British media reported claims…

Are the Democrats Plotting a 'Maidan Trap' for Trump at 'Peaceful' Portland Protests?
_____ | strategic-culture.org | 2020-07-31
By now it is abundantly clear that the Democrats will do just about anything to ensure Trump's defeat in November. That would include the proliferation of violence in major American cities to provide optics to the narrative that the US leader has been an unmitigated disaster for the United States. Will Portland, Oregon become Donald Trump's Maidan? | During the public grilling of Attorney General William Barr on July 28, the Democrat's pushed one argument above all others: Democratic cities had been enjoying their 'summer of love' that saw righteous folks peacefully protesting against police abuse until Darth Tru…

Russiagate, Nazis, and the CIA
_____ | strategic-culture.org | 2020-07-31
Rob URIE | The political success of Russiagate lies in the vanishing of American history in favor of a faàßade of liberal virtue. Posed as a response to the election of Donald Trump, a straight line can be drawn from efforts to undermine the decommissioning of the American war economy in 1946 to the CIA's alliance with Ukrainian fascists in 2014. In 1945 the NSC (National Security Council) issued a series of directives that gave logic and direction to the CIA's actions during the Cold War. That these persist despite the 'fall of communism' suggests that it was always just a placeholder in the pursuit of oth…

Noam Chomsky: Decades of "the Neoliberal Plague" Left U.S. Unprepared for COVID-19 Outbreak
Staff | democracynow.org | 2020-07-30
As the U.S. coronavirus death toll tops 150,000, we spend the hour with world-renowned political dissident, linguist and author Noam Chomsky, who says decades of neoliberal policies that shredded the social safety net and public institutions left the country ill-prepared for a major health crisis. "We should understand the roots of this pandemic," he says.

Chomsky on Cuba's "Internationalist" Response to Pandemic & Need to Make Vaccine Globally Accessible
Staff | democracynow.org | 2020-07-30
As the world races to develop a COVID-19 vaccine, Noam Chomsky says any successful treatment must be accessible to everyone, and he warns that President Trump's withdrawal from the World Health Organization will hamper the international body's efforts to distribute medicine in countries racked by poverty and war. "There's at least one country in the world that is showing genuine internationalism, providing medical aid and support for people that need it," Chomsky says, and that is Cuba.

Chomsky on Israel's Hindering of Palestinian Pandemic Response & Threat to Annex Occupied West Bank
Staff | democracynow.org | 2020-07-30
Noam Chomsky says Israel's planned annexation of the occupied West Bank "basically formalizes" what has already been official policy over the last half-century, from both left-wing and right-wing parties in Israel. He compares Israel's treatment of Palestinians to anti-immigrant policies in the United States, and says the main goal of annexation is to take over as much territory while excluding its Palestinian inhabitants. "Israel does not want to bring Palestinian populations into the greater Israel they're constructing."
