American Troops to Leave Germany: Is It Goodbye or Just Auf Wiedersehen?
Philip Giraldi | thealtworld.com | 2020-08-02
The continued presence of tens of thousands of American military personnel in Europe seventy-five years after the end of the Second World War is rarely questioned either by politicians or the mainstream media. Currently there is little recollection of how, after the war ended, soldiers from Britain, France, the U.S. and the Soviet Union occupied Germany, each in a designated zone. Germany's capital Berlin was divided into four sectors, each with a foreign military occupying force. I was a part of that occupation force from 1968 through 1971, serving in the U.S. Army's Berlin Brigade as part of the 430th Military…

_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-02
The US has launched a brazen, criminal and arrogant plan to overthrow Nicaragua's government. A well orchestrated plan financed by the United States to launch a coup d'état in Nicaragua over the next two years was leaked in a document from the US embassy and presented July 31, 2020 by Nicaraguan journalist William Grigsby on his political analysis program "Sin Fronteras", on Radio La Primerísima. The new coup plan is in response to the fact that the US realizes President Daniel Ortega will likely win the November 2021 elections.

COVID-19 Crisis Failure, People Must Save Themselves And The Economy
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-02
The US is at a moment of truth. This week, Congress has to face up to a pandemic that is out of control and an economy that is collapsing. The Republican's and Democrat's proposals show they will fail this test. The people will need to protect themselves and lead from below. Our actions need to be about building a people's movement that grows in power before and after the November elections. No matter who is elected, the people will need to resist, create new systems and rule from below.

_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-02
On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law. This crowning achievement was both the culmination of a decades-long effort to attain guaranteed universal health insurance and the first step in the quest for Medicare for All. | In the 55 years since the legislation was signed into law, both programs have proven their worth. Before Medicare, about half of seniors lacked health insurance. They were an illness away from bankruptcy. Today, 99.1 percent of Americans 65 and older are insured, thanks to Medicare.

In America's Emerald City these days, if there's even a hint of a war-wind-down, imperial-deescalation, or military budget-cuts, Washington's (non-dribbling) Wizards have a ready response: Russia! Since President Donald Trump's election year, basketball's Wizards are a meager 148-162; the Wizards of Warfare are essentially undefeated — not a single war hath ended. How Covid-19 Could Upend Geopolitics
_____ | strategic-culture.org | 2020-08-02
John FEFFER | I don't trust you. | Don't take it personally. It doesn't matter whether you're a friend or a stranger. I don't care about your identity or your politics, where you work or if you work, whether you wear a mask or carry a gun. | I don't trust you because you are, for the time being, a potential carrier of a deadly virus. You don't have any symptoms? Maybe you're an asymptomatic superspreader. Show me your negative test results and I'll still have my doubts. U.S. Troop Removal From Germany: a NATO-Skeptic POTUS Always Wins
_____ | strategic-culture.org | 2020-08-02
Is there any good reason why Germany is still occupied by the United States? After 75+ years one could make a strong argument that the Nazi threat is over. Donald Trump would seem to agree with this sentiment and directly stated that he wants to continue to reduce the number of American soldiers on the territory of today's friendlier tolerant and geopolitically submissive Deutschland. The logic by which U.S. forces are stationed across the globe has been called into question many times and very often has no sellable answer. Trump himself agrees with the dubious nature of the need to have an American army base in…

The Battle of Kursk
_____ | strategic-culture.org | 2020-08-02
The Battle of Kursk in central Russia unfolded at almost the same time that the allied landing in Sicily, which largely eclipses it in the western popular memory. But it is impossible to compare these operations, whether in terms of scale, the forces and equipment involved, or outcome. While the Sicilian operation allowed for the landing of allied troops in continental Italy, the failure of German Operation Citadel resulted in the complete collapse of the Wehrmacht's offensive strategy.

We Are in the Process of Completely Losing America
_____ | strategic-culture.org | 2020-08-02
Michael SNYDER | When I was growing up, I was taught to love America. My father was in the U.S. Navy, our family spent six years overseas as he served at a military base in a foreign land, and every day I would say the Pledge of Allegiance at the local school for military children that I attended. It was during this period of time that Ronald Reagan was first elected president of the United States, and the things that he said about the greatness of America's values really inspired me. Of course no nation has ever been perfect, but at one time the United States was united by a common set of values that we were con…

[Perspectives] Why vaccine rumours stick–and getting them unstuck
Bruce Gellin | thelancet.com | 2020-08-01
Infectious diseases have long shaped human history, from the plague of Athens (430–427 BCE) that killed around a third of the Athenian population, the Black Death in the 14th century that killed about 30–60% of all Europeans, and the 1918–19 influenza pandemic that took the lives of at least 50 million people globally. In the 8 months since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, more than 600‚Äà000 people worldwide have died from COVID-19 as of July 21, 2020. No sector of society has been spared and the full economic and societal reckoning will be grim by any account.

The Lancet | thelancet.com | 2020-08-01
The tidal wave of information on the internet concerning the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in difficulties in discerning truth from fiction. This so-called infodemic, defined by WHO as an "overabundance of information–some accurate and some not–that makes it harder for people to find trustworthy sources and reliable guidance when needed", has become a major threat to public health. Infection rates will rise if people are confused about restrictions and patients may be harmed if they use unproven treatments or bogus remedies.

The 1 Percent's Attack on Unemployment Benefits is a Sign of Our Broken Democracy

The long-term systemic reason that working people are willing to accept jobs that cannot provide enough income to cover basic needs is because they are unable to organize and demand higher wages. We thank Marleen Hendriks and colleagues and Adam Richards for their comments regarding the HOPE 4 trial.1 Hendriks and colleagues draw attention to the generalisability of our findings as the non-physician health workers were paid by the project and the study medications were provided to the intervention group free of charge. Although working within the infrastructure of existing health-care systems might be theoretically optimal for uptake and sustainability, most health systems do not adequately address cardiovascular disease control.

With great interest we read the encouraging results of the HOPE 4 trial by Jon-David Schwalm and colleagues.1 However, we agree with Tanzeen H Jafar and colleagues2 that the generalisability of the findings is limited because the non-physician health workers were privately paid by the study, and drugs were provided for free. Our work in Kenya shows that non-physician health workers are often overburdened, and that drugs are frequently out of stock in public facilities and pricey in private health facilities, leading to high out-of-pocket expenditure.

Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disorder characterised by recurrent eczematous lesions and intense itch. The disorder affects people of all ages and ethnicities, has a substantial psychosocial impact on patients and relatives, and is the leading cause of the global burden from skin disease. Atopic dermatitis is associated with increased risk of multiple comorbidities, including food allergy, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and mental health disorders. The pathophysiology is complex and involves a strong genetic predisposition, epidermal dysfunction, and T-cell driven inflammation.

Lucy C Chappell and colleagues1 showed that, at the expense of increased neonatal unit admissions related to premature births, immediate planned delivery reduced maternal morbidity and severe hypertension compared with expectant management among women with late preterm pre-eclampsia. Although the authors conclude that their trial supports this strategy in favour of initiation of delivery in women with late preterm pre-eclampsia, we are concerned about the underestimation of long-term neonatal morbidities.

On 23 July, World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that the world now has 15 million people infected by COVID-19. 'The pandemic has disrupted the lives of billions of people. Many have been at home for months', he said. The trauma of the Great Lockdown is taking a serious psycho-social toll. 'It's completely understandable that people want to get on with their lives', Dr. Ghebreyesus said. 'But we will not go back to the "old normal". The pandemic has already changed the way we live our lives.

Trump's Golden Era Of Energy Is Turning To Lead

It was just over a year ago that President Trump announced, "The golden era of American energy is now underway," saying that his policies focused on exploiting oil, gas, and coal were "unleashing energy dominance." | What a difference a year makes. On July 10, the Financial Times ran an article with a headline that asked, "Is the party finally over for U.S. oil and gas?" And there is no doubt that it has been quite a party for the last decade. At least, for the fracking executives who have enriched themselves while losing hundreds of billions of dollars investors gave them to produce oil and gas.

No To The New Cold War With China

China's Ambassador to the United States posed a very simple question: "Is the United States ready or willing to live with another country with a very different culture, a very different political and economic system … in peace?" | The answer to this question must be that despite the intentions of the U.S. rulers, the people must opt for peace. For the Black liberation and anti-imperialist movement in the U.S., we are clear: War is a class issue and we say not one drop of blood from the Black working class and poor to defend the capitalist oligarchy.

Lawson as "the leading theorist and strategist of nonviolence in the world." Lawson invoked John Lewis's life as a call to action. Nancy J. Altman | counterpunch.org | 2020-07-31
On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law. This crowning achievement was both the culmination of a decades-long effort to attain guaranteed universal health insurance and the first step in the quest for Medicare for All. Insurgents and Iconoclasts Needed (But for Now Lay Low)
Andrew Levine | counterpunch.org | 2020-07-31
Even before Donald Trump and his trophy bride rode down that gilded escalator in Trump Tower, launching his campaign for the White House by denouncing "Mexican rapists," it was plain as day that he was, at best, a sick joke, unfit for the office he would go on to win in the Electoral College after…

Feds Give In, Maybe
Richard C. Gross | counterpunch.org | 2020-07-31
It's possible someone finally persuaded President Donald Trump that sending to Portland federal agents outfitted in military camouflage to confront civilians with tear gas and other devices during two months of nightly street demonstrations won't win him voters beyond his followers. It's good bet his supporters, allies, followers, cultists, white supremacists, the "some very good people"

A Portland 'Sit-Down' Can Rock Trump's Boat
Barbara G. Ellis | counterpunch.org | 2020-07-31
For the last five weekends, I and my dozen BLM sign-waving, curbside cohorts–mine now has an addenda ("Trump's Latest Crime: Secret Police in PDX")–do hour-long shifts on a traffic-heavy corner of Portland's Holgate/Caesar Chavez Boulevards. We're one of several groups dotting the city with our post located nearly five miles East from Trump's notorious secret-…

COVID-19 vaccine may come, but what about equitable distribution?
Sandipan Talukdar | peoplesdispatch.org | 2020-07-31
An effective and safe vaccine is probably the easiest way to beat the pandemic. However, the vaccine will take its own time to reach the people in general. We may get it soon or we may not. Will the world have a situation where a few countries will hoard most of the doses of the vaccine and poorer countries will have to wait? The chances are high. | Let's ta…
